Acura premiered its first 'Factory Performance' upgrade package for the popular RSX-S model center stage at the Acura display during this year's SEMA Show.

The Factory Performance package goes on sale in early 2003 and it was my fortune to be able to test-drive the very vehicle that was on display at the SEMA Show.  The new Acura RSX-Type S FP edition is a thrill to drive around town, on the open road and around twisting mountain roads.  The potent, 200hp, high-revving DOHC 2.0 liter i-VTEC is now better matched to an enhanced suspension system that features custom track-tuned shocks and springs that lower the car by approximately one inch.  These shocks and springs combined with lightweight Kreuzer 17x7 inch Series X aluminum alloy wheels wrapped around by very sticky Yokohama P225/45ZR-17 ES100 high-performance tires give the new Acura RSX-Type S factory performance edition quicker acceleration, instant turn-in, reduced body role and increased cornering grip.  The custom slotted brake rotors and Moduro carbon fiber performance brake pads further combine to give the RSX Type-S a shorter braking distance and reduced brake fade from speed.  New track specs are better with a lower 0-60 mph time of 6.4 seconds, the quarter mile in 14.8 seconds at 95.1 mph, and a 600ft. slalom speed of 65.2 mph.   The RSX-Type S now stops in just 118 feet from 60 mph to 0.

A tall, Factory Performance rear wing spoiler and an under-body spoiler kit further enhance the more aggressive, high-performance look.  On the inside is metallic-look trim around the door handles and four round air-outlets.  The inside also features Factory Performance badging, and the silky smooth, quick shifting 6-speed stick now sports a metal knob with FP graphic on top.

Starting in early 2003, an RSX Types owner can build a pure Acura performance vehicle with no compromises and without affecting the factory warranty on their car.  The Factory Performance package will have an MSRP of $4,800, plus installation.  While Acura offers a wide range of dealer installed accessories, the introduction of the RSX Types Factory Performance package marks the first time Acura will offer a comprehensive high performance kit to be installed by dealers and covered under a factory warranty.
