Story by Glenn Oyoung Pictures by Sean Spear Where did the summer go? August gave way to September, which means fall is around the corner. Luckily for those gear heads that live in Monrovia and surrounding cities, it also means one big bash to celebrate all things hot rod before the weather turns. The 26th Annual Monrovia Hot Rod & Custom Car Show rolled into Downtown Monrovia, taking over the historic Myrtle Avenue main drag on 9.10.16 (which happens to also be Monrovia’s zip code). Old Town Monrovia was the perfect backdrop for the annual car show, serving up beautifully preserved buildings with art deco and mid-century modern designs that match the hot rods and street rods of the same era.

Initially started by a group of die-hard car guys who formed the Monrovia Hot Rod Club, the Monrovia Hot Rod & Custom Car show has been organized by the Street Rods Forever (SRF) car club over the last 25 years. It’s not easy to put a show of this magnitude together every year. It takes a lot of volunteers, led by SFR president Tregg Wright and the SFR Board of Directors, to coordinate all the requisite details from marketing to working out logistics with the City of Monrovia staff. Wh for the pleasure of the City of Monrovia, its residents, for all those who come from far and wide to display and to see all the cool vintage Street Rods and others from 1970 and older,” said SFR member Bob Kline. “It’s also a fundraiser,” he continued. The car show has raised funds for local organizations including the City of Hope, Monrovia Unity Center, Monrovia Friends Of the Library and others, according to Kline.

Show-goers were treated to a wide variety of classic cars including street rods, custom, vintage, original stock from 1970 and older. In previous years Kline points out the show has even drawn the likes of professional NHRA drag racers, a special treat for Monrovians.
