Petersen Automotive Museum – McLaren Lego Build Day

McLaren and Lego join forces to let kids of all ages put the finishing touches on their 1:1 scale McLaren 720S

Weighing in at just over 2,800 pounds and sporting a twin-turbo V8 that pumps out 710hp, the McLaren 720S is truly a rocket-ship with wheels – capable of propelling its pilot to 62 mph in the blink of an eye (2.9 seconds to be exact). You’d think it’s borderline invincible, including the smiles-per-minute category. Thankfully the mad geniuses at McLaren have a penchant for one-upping themselves. Enter the LEGO® McLaren 720S – a 1:1 scale model comprised of over 280,000 LEGO bricks and weighs in at over 3,200 pounds.

On June 2nd guests at the Petersen Automotive Museum were given the chance to help put the finishing touches on the LEGO McLaren 720S. The model was built around a steel frame, with a team of six working for over 2,000 hours to give the guests a 99.99999% running start. Kids and their parents including yours truly were delighted to have the chance to help add bricks to the model and partake in the other LEGO® activities on hand. Fans were able to customize their own mini LEGO® Speed Champions McLaren on an iPad, build their own race cars at LEGO build tables, and race their creations on race ramps.

The full-size model will be on display at the Petersen through August 19th on the second floor outside the Discovery Center. The Petersen store is also carrying the LEGO Speed Champions McLaren 720S set for those who can’t get enough McLaren assembly fun.
