LACar was lucky enough to be invited to Toyota’s new Los Angeles* HQs the other day to get a first impression of the Corolla line-up for 2020.  The takeaway was that Toyota is still well on top of things and making some very nice mid-sized automobiles in a mid-reasonable price range ($19,500 for the quite serviceable “L” model to $25,450 for the all-in XSE version, with the 52 mile-per-gallon LE Hybrid almost precisely-centered at $22,950).

It’s in the news virtually every day. And not all of it is good: Production hell, cash shortages, wayward tweets from the CEO, threats from the SEC. Consumer Reports dropped the Model 3 from its recommendations because members say they’ve identified a number of problems with their cars. And yet, the same Consumer Reports says the Model 3 holds the top stop on its list of cars that owners say they will buy again. Tesla runs no ads or commercials for its vehicles. And yet, its Model 3 outsells the competitors at BMW, Mercedes and Lexus.

In 2016, Daniel Mayeda stood in line at the Tesla store in Century City, California to place his deposit on the Model 3. In September of 2018, he took delivery on the car and never looked back. We asked him to tell all about life after Tesla Model 3 acquisition. He does. – The Editors

In case you missed the recent LA Auto Show there’s (yet another) new wave of upstart (er… startup) automobile manufacturers coming on-line even as the Big Three (almost in panic mode it seems) jettison their compact and sedan lines in favor of trucks, SUVs, and crossovers.

… Here’s the deal, we asked our friends at Ford for a small cross-over type vehicle to road test over a five-day family journey up to the cool blue beauty of Lake Tahoe.

The Blue Oval people kindly loaned us a “Lightning Blue” Ecosport with the new 1-liter EcoBoost engine … We then loaded it up with a load of personal survival gear which included nine or ten complete changes of wardrobe, eleven jackets and four vests of varying density, and a pair of shoes for just about every imaginable occasion (and some for just in case).  All in all there was enough gear aboard for close to a two month tour and that included our two dogs, and (very) heavy ice chest*.  The above all stowed aboard, we set out for the cool country.
