HOT WIRE— Dario Franchitti slipped the wreath over his head and took a healthy sip of cool milk in Victory Circle at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway. First, however, he donned a pair of white cardboard sunglasses—a tribute to longtime friend and fellow Indianapolis 500 champion Dan Wheldon. “Now my face on the Borg-Warner Trophy will be on either side of Dan’s,” Franchitti said of the 2011 race winner who died in a racing accident. Franchitti became the 10th driver with three or more 500 wins, holding off charges from Scott Dixon, Takuma Sato and Tony Kanaan over the final five laps.
AUTO REVIEW—It’s named after an Italian island famous for its colorful glassware. It’s also the name of the glass itself. Nissan wants you to regard its 2012 Murano Platinum Edition crossover as work of art. While we won’t go that far, we do think Nissan has cooked up a tasty, likeable and ultimately very pleasing vehicle in the Murano. Harvey Schwartz reports in “Pleasant Under Glass”.
HOT WIRE—EcoCAR 2: Plugging In to the Future named Mississippi State University its Year One winner at the EcoCAR 2012 Competition in Los Angeles. The 15 universities competing in EcoCAR 2 gathered for six days of judged competition with $100,000 in prize money up for grabs. EcoCAR 2, a three-year competition sponsored by the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE), General Motors (GM) and 25 other government and industry leaders, gives students the opportunity to gain eco-friendly automotive engineering experience while striving to improve the energy efficiency of the 2013 Chevrolet Malibu.
