As if Los Angeles gear heads weren’t spoiled enough by all the blessings that great weather brings – the year-long car shows, the endless supply of rust-free project cars, the list goes on – once a year we must also choose between two exciting racing series that seem to fall on the same weekend here in LA. You get your choice of watching a fierce ballet of cars burning up tires with Formula Drift in Irwindale, or you can watch close quarters combat and cars taking flight with Red Bull Global Rallycross (GRC). Our intrepid photographer A.J. Wong chose cars taking flight.

This year fan favorite Tanner Foust took home the win for the round and Volkswagen Andretti Rallycross teammate Scott Speed came in second. In doing so, Speed took the Supercar driver’s championship and Volkswagen locked up the manufacturer’s championship. On the GRC Lites* side, DirtFish Motorsports’ Conner Martell battled it out for the win while Frenchman Cyril Raymond piloted the OLSBERGS MSE X FORCES car to the championship.

We covered the LA round last year in depth, and were struck by how intimate a sport it is, with fans literally able to walk right up to their racing heroes and ask a question or walk through the pits and see what it takes to patch one of these hyper GRC cars back together between rounds. Formula D offers the same level of connection – which perhaps is telling as far as the future of motorsports goes. – the Editors

*It just dawned on me that between Motegi, AEM, BFG, and Mountune we know all the right people to do an in-depth piece on the GRC Lite car. And we look good in flat bill hats. Mental note: must make that happen before the 2018 season.
