This entry in the great LACar journal in the cloud will be more of an “impression” than a full-out review … my own background (and foreground as well) making it somewhat difficult to view “DIRT” in any sort of a non-partisan light.

That said I’ll tell you what I think, what I think non-combatants will think, and then follow up with what the people at Warners say about the adventure. Here goes:

Virtually every theatrical racing movie that I’ve ever seen (or worked on: ONE*) has followed a similar story line. And that would be some sort of a blurry or problematic past, a chance at something like redemption, a non-fatal fail, some basic turmoil … personal conflict, a last shot at redemption, (the win) and the (almost) inevitable roar of the crowd and the (again almost) obligatory steep camera pull-back from the final victory celebration.

Some of you have seen the Minivan Hater in various automotive magazines and all the different tech articles that poor truck has been through. But in some cases, it was a necessity and you know the truck is 19 years old. So, yeah, it’s got some aches and pains, kind of like the owner. HA!
One of the key items on any engine that seems to get overlooked is the air induction system. That mentality is more prominent toward engines that don’t have any modifications and is just an everyday kind of truck.

Keeping things fresh—it’s a trick that can be difficult. Last year’s Classic Auto Show in LA was fantastic. I went two days in a row, and the second was better than the first, as I detailed for LA Car. At the time, I wondered—would it be the same next year? Not that that would invalidate it, but you know the thing that happens. You go once, you go again, and you realize the third time that you’ve done this enough.

More often than not, we all see things at least a little (and sometimes vastly) differently from each another. Our interpretation of colors, sounds, and even our feelings of cars change based on our age, geographic area, and socio-economic background, just to name a few reasons.

Occasionally, stepping out of our comfort zone and delving into the thoughts of others provides some curious insight. In this case, LACar is peering into the mind of one special 14-year old, Steven Aghakhani.

One of Barnard’s earliest and most excellent photographs includes two of them, both in the star-cluster M8. The larger, which is roughly rectangular in outline, contains one little star, and its smaller neighbor is lune-shaped — surely a most singular form for such an object.

Zoom-zoom. For automotive enthusiasts the name Mazda is synonymous with this catchy tagline. Like some kind of automotive Rorschach test, the words “Zoom-Zoom” conjure up images of red gen-1 Miata’s carving up roads like 1.5:1 scale go-karts.

Besides the Le-Mans winning Renown Mazda 787B, Miata, and RX-7, I have been preoccupied with other marquees for most of my life. However lately anytime anyone – car fan or not – asks me what kind of car they should get in the sedan or SUV category, I immediately include Mazda. In fact, I must sound like a Mazda fanboy as I go on and on to describe the design renaissance that Mazda is undergoing, the beautiful exterior and interior design that cars like the CX-9 feature, and the sporty driving feel that Mazda focuses on.

Pomona, Calif. The Mecum Auctions (surely you’ve seen one on television … right … way cool cars, trucks, motorcycles, even man cave memorabilia all being paraded across an open stage in front of a raucous crowd, each barely slowing down as they cross from left to right, only to pause for what seems split seconds with an auctioneer shouting, cajoling, challenging, and quite unsubtly suggesting prices that ratchet show on a gargantuan overheard scoreboard that flashes the current bid in bucks, euros, and two or three other basic world currencies). Get ready. They are coming to the Fairplex in Pomona on Friday and Saturday, February 16th and 17th.
