Zoom-zoom. For automotive enthusiasts the name Mazda is synonymous with this catchy tagline. Like some kind of automotive Rorschach test, the words “Zoom-Zoom” conjure up images of red gen-1 Miata’s carving up roads like 1.5:1 scale go-karts.

Besides the Le-Mans winning Renown Mazda 787B, Miata, and RX-7, I have been preoccupied with other marquees for most of my life. However lately anytime anyone – car fan or not – asks me what kind of car they should get in the sedan or SUV category, I immediately include Mazda. In fact, I must sound like a Mazda fanboy as I go on and on to describe the design renaissance that Mazda is undergoing, the beautiful exterior and interior design that cars like the CX-9 feature, and the sporty driving feel that Mazda focuses on.

Pomona, Calif. The Mecum Auctions (surely you’ve seen one on television … right … way cool cars, trucks, motorcycles, even man cave memorabilia all being paraded across an open stage in front of a raucous crowd, each barely slowing down as they cross from left to right, only to pause for what seems split seconds with an auctioneer shouting, cajoling, challenging, and quite unsubtly suggesting prices that ratchet show on a gargantuan overheard scoreboard that flashes the current bid in bucks, euros, and two or three other basic world currencies). Get ready. They are coming to the Fairplex in Pomona on Friday and Saturday, February 16th and 17th.

Editor’s Note: We are very proud to list this remarkable motorsports artist/illustrator as one of our happy group of staff member/contributors to LACar. What follows is the official announcement from the LBGPA.

HECTOR CADEMARTORI
Official Artist of the 2018 Toyota Grand Prix of Long Beach

Born in Buenos Aires, where Juan Manuel Fangio was a household name, Cademartori was first influenced in racing in the mid-1960s by the European tradition and great drivers such as Dan Gurney , Jackie Stewart, Pedro Rodriguez, Graham Hill, John Surtees and all the F1 and sports car stars of those days. “Argentina is very much Europe-oriented, therefore we all had a strong influence from Formula One and FIA sportscar racing (my favorite sportscar driver was Vic Elford), but I always followed the Indianapolis 500”.

Work Trucks and Luxury Crossovers, Not So Strange Bedfellows
By Mark Dapoz and Chris Merlo

It’s all about the money or specifically big fat margins. The kind of margins when you build close to 900,000 versions of a single model and begin to watch the profits roll in as average transaction prices per unit head north of $45,000. That’s the truck end of the story and well, if you are selling cars you’re pretty much sucking air hoping that a fuel shortage – one that would suffocate truck sales – will reignite the popularity of sedans and hatchbacks among today’s truck and utility loving shoppers. Oh and that’s how we get to luxury crossovers. Every automaker needs a truck or an SUV – preferably midsized – in their line up.
