By Harold Osmer Real car guys’ hearts don’t race upon hearing the words Toyota Avalon, but that may soon change. Toyota’s completely redesigned Avalon represents the company’s more aggressive approach to their product line. Avalon has long been the top model for Toyota and has developed a strong, loyal customer base. For 2013, Avalon is sleeker, more stylish, and more visually appealing both inside and out. Four trim levels will be offered though even the base level Avalon can well be considered fully loaded. Stepping up brings more technology, wheel/styling options, and an intense JBL stereo system.
The tried and true 3.5-Liter V6 2GR-FE engine produces 268 horsepower at 6200 rpm and 248 pound-feet of torque at 4700 rpm. Avalon will also be available with a hybrid system for more eco-friendly travelling. Both standard and hybrid models have selectable options for Driver Mode ranging from NORMAL/ECO/SPORT which control acceleration aspects as well as providing suspension and steering feedback.
Interior appointments include hand stitched trim, improved ambient lighting, capacitive switches for the heater control panel, and increased storage space. Rear seat passengers have more leg and shoulder room than previous models and Avalon’s 3-zone AC system will help keep them comfortable. Toyota isn’t messing around with the new Avalon. Our first drive impressions are very positive and we look forward to long-term review opportunity.
