A veritable sea of gleaming hot rods, colorful custom cars, tricked out muscle cars, lovingly restored classic cars, ready-for-action trucks, specialty vehicles, and showcase PT Cruisers, Corvettes, Mustangs and Mini Coopers - a whopping 3,500 privately owned vehicles in all - roll into Orange County for the 7th Annual Cruisin' For A Cure, the country's largest one-day car show, on Saturday, September 23, 2006, from 7:00 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., at the Orange County Fair & Exposition Center in Costa Mesa. Proceeds from the show, which is one of the largest and most successful prostate cancer fundraising events in the nation and is held in conjunction with Prostate Cancer Awareness Month (September), benefit prostate cancer research at UCLA's Jonsson Comprehensive Cancer Center. Mixing the serious with the fun, FREE PSA prostate cancer screening tests are available to men over 40. Last year, approximately 900 men were tested, and nearly 10 percent came back with a "see your doctor" indication. Organizers hope to test 1,500 men this year. Cruisin' For A Cure offers something for car enthusiasts of all ages - from the oldest to the youngest. In addition to the acres and acres of cars on exhibit, there are dozens of booths where major automotive companies display their latest products and offer free samples, including Meguiar's, N.A.D.A. Guides, Downs Manufacturing, Firestone, Dupont, Currie Enterprises, Pete & Jakes, Budnik Wheels, MagnaFlow Exhaust, Chip Foose Design, the Spade Bros., Edlebrock, Guaranty Chevrolet, Gennie Shifters, Connell Chevrolet, Tustin Hummer, Dodge, Orange County Harley Davidson, Nabers Cadillac, Automobile Club of Southern California, Chino Valley Featherlite Trailers, and many others. Youngsters can race Hot Wheels head-to-head on a special competition track set up by Mattel. Vintage fire trucks from the Crown Fire Coach Enthusiasts' both horse drawn and motorized - add a nostalgic element, and Corvette & Musclecar Warehouse showcases rare and unusual high-end beauties that tip the half-million dollar mark. Throughout the day, cars will also motor along a one-mile long cruise route that snakes through the Fairgrounds. In addition, plenty tasty food is on tap. To help set the mood for car lovers, Brian Beirne, "Mr. Rock N Roll," hosts free concerts throughout the day. The line up includes Leon Hughes "The Original Coaster" and his group; Freddy "Boom-Boom" Cannon; rising country star Casey Simpson; and rock act "The Answer To Classic Rock." Cruisin' For Cure President and Founding Chair Debbie Baker, a resident of Lake Forest, California whose husband is a prostate cancer survivor, has been known to personally escort legions of men to the prostate cancer testing van. "It is imperative to raise awareness about prostate cancer to save lives,' she says. "We've offered free PSA testing since the event's inception seven years ago. More than 4,000 men have taken advantage of the testing, which takes only ten minutes. Over the past seven years more than 385 men have been saved because they were notified that they had elevated PSA levels, an indicator of prostate cancer. Those men had no idea that they were one of the statistics of this disease. But they caught it early enough to live a healthy normal life. You could call this the save-your-life car show." According to the American Cancer Society, prostate cancer is the second leading cause of cancer death in men.
