At $84,595, the M2 CS is nearly $25,000 more than the M2 Competition.
Yeah, that price (83,600 plus a $995 destination fee) might make even the most ravenous M2 fanatics second guess the M2 CS. The starting price for the M2 Competition is $58,900. A price jump that large between trim levels, not models is quite shocking. Remember, this is still an M2. Say it out loud if you need to.
The BMW M2 CS was officially revealed at the 2019 Los Angeles Auto Show and created a sizeable amount of buzz. Fitted with the engine from the M4 Competition, the M2 CS was destined to be quick. 444 horsepower quick, to be exact.
Compared to the M2 Competition, the M2 CS does get some nice upgrades. Horsepower is increased by 39, while the torque stays at 406 lb.-ft. A nice list of Carbon Fiber Reinforced Plastic (CFRP) parts come with the CS, including hood, roof, and aerodynamic components. BMW hasn’t officially released how much weight has been shaved off via the extensive CFRP, but I’m not convinced that it’ll be $25,000 worth.
The M2 CS is available with either a six-speed manual transmission, or a seven-speed double clutch automatic transmission. The manual is equipped with ‘rev-matching technology which blips the throttle on downshifts and lowers the engine’s revs on upshifts, making gear changes even smoother.’ I’m not sure how this compares with some good old-fashioned heel-toe, but a very cool piece of tech regardless. 0-60mph times are 3.8 seconds in the automatic, and 4.0 in the manual.
Along with the bragging rights obtained by buying a CS, you also get adaptive dampers, some cosmetic parts, and badges all over the place. To avoid some bewildered looks, it might be a good idea to keep the price to yourself.
While the M2 CS definitely proves to be the better performer, $84,595 is brutal. I think you’re better off buying a M2 Competition and putting that extra $25,000 towards something useful like upgrades or gear.
