ONLY 10 CARS MEET THE 2016 FUEL ECONOMY MANDATE On May 19, 2009 President Barack Obama proposed a new national fuel economy program which adopts uniform federal standards to regulate both fuel economy and greenhouse gas emissions while preserving the legal authorities of DOT, EPA and California. According to the government's site, fueleconomy.gov, only 10 2010 model vehicles (and five makes) meet the tough standards for 2016: MPG City/Highway TWO-SEATER CARS smart fortwo convertible 33/41 smart fortwo coupe 33/41 COMPACT CARS Honda Civic Hybrid 40/45 Honda Insight 40/43 Volkswagen Golf TDI 30/41 Volkswagen Jetta TDI 30/41 MIDSIZE CARS Toyota Prius 51/48 SMALL STATION WAGONS Audi A3 TDI 30/42 Volkswagen Jetta SportWagen TDI 30/42 Volkswagen Jetta SportWagen TDI 30/41 "Doesn't that give you a warm feeling?," says Bruce Hall of the Detroit News You can check for yourself at fueleconomy.gov
