Mercedes-AMG Project ONE Moves Closer to Production

The Mercedes-AMG Project ONE hypercar is now proceeding with fast lap testing in pre-production models at the company’s proving ground in Immendingen.

The highly anticipated Mercedes-AMG Project ONE hypercar enters a new phase of testing, bringing it closer to production. The AMG proving grounds at Immendingen, Germany, echo with the roars of the 1000 horsepower hybrid power unit seated in the back of the Project ONE.

Testing has now transitioned from static tests on concrete to test tracks. Project leaders have also given the green light to test the comprehensively electrified and complex hybrid power unit.

The Mercedes-AMG Project ONE features a complete adaptation of a Formula 1 drive unit, which is a massive undertaking. Mercedes says this new technology will set the bar for performance in a road-going vehicle.

Mercedes-AMG looks to deliver a hypercar that performs exceptionally on the track, but tame enough to drive on the street. The Project ONE must also be able to drive in all-electric mode. Handling the noise of the car has proved to be a challenge, but the wizards at AMG are working to find solutions that could be developed to production maturity.

The Project ONE also features fully-functional active aerodynamics, which is still being developed to perfection. A complex relationship between various active components is proving to be effective outside of the wind tunnel. Louvers, the air outlets in the front fenders, and the large rear spoiler delivers the car’s exceptional handling dynamics.

While complete cars zip around test tracks, development work still continues on some of the various vehicle systems in Affalterbach, the company’s home base. Engine test beds and in-house simulators are constantly running to make sure everything will meet the demands presented by the hypercar.

So, what’s the next step in the development process after this? Mercedes-AMG wants to take the Project ONE to the north loop of the Nürburgring.
