LA AUTO SHOW 2009 November 21-30, 2008: Close to 40 world and North American vehicle debuts for the Los Angeles Auto Show We may be in the midst of a credit crisis, and some automakers are talking bailout on Capital Hill, but at the Los Angeles Convention Center, the manufacturers were partying like it's 1999 (as Prince would say). Close to 40 world and North American premieres of production and/or concept vehicles from global automakers were unveiled during the show's Press Days on November 19th and 20th. World debuts came from Audi, Ford, Honda, Infiniti, Lamborghini, Lexus, Lincoln, Lotus, Mazda, Mercury, Nissan, Porsche and Volkswagen. 2008 marks the third consecutive year that the LA Auto Show will take place in the fall rather than early January. With more than 20 worldwide debuts for this year, it is apparent that the new show dates have increased the relevance of the LA show among auto makers worldwide. "Putting more distance between our show and Detroit has allowed manufacturers more time and resources to commit to the LA Auto Show" said Andy Fuzesi, general manager of the LA Auto Show. "This has resulted in more vehicle debuts, media attendance and coverage." Some of the world debuts for the LA Auto Show included Nissan's next generation Z and the highly anticipated redesign of the legendary Ford Mustang. In addition to the record number of world debuts, there were a number of North American debuts, including Honda's all-new hybrid vehicle concept, the Insight. Even Ferrari showed the appropriately-named Ferrari California, its first retractable hardtop convertible. Our roving reporters provide a sampling of the new toys at the show: AUDI A6

The new A6 The Audi A6 for 2009 appears to have gotten a bit of a facelift. Sure, it has the big, bold single-frame grill that is unmistakably Audi, but you'll also notice that redesigned air vents and fog lights nicely accent the car's sporty new look, as does the LED lighting in both front and rear. As for power, the 255-hp V6 and 350-hp V8 engines are now joined by a supercharged 300-hp direct-injection V6. Improved suspension and higher resolution graphics on the multi-media LCD screen are also among the improvements. An optional high-beam assistant automatically switches between low beam and high beam headlights. - Reed Berry AUDI Q5 TDI

A pair of Q5 TDIs If the Audi Q5 looks familiar, it may be because a convertible concept version, the Audi Cross Cabriolet quattro, was shown here last year. Built on the new Audi MLP (Modular Longitudinal Platform), the Q5 is a compact crossover vehicle that is both good looking and practical. Of the available engines, the most powerful is the 3.0 TDI, a 240-hp V6 diesel that will take you from zero to sixty in just over six seconds. The 3.0 TDI is paired with a twin-clutch seven-speed transmission that shifts automatically or can be shifted manually. The less powerful 2.0 TDI (170-hp) has a six-speed manual transmission. - Reed Berry BMW ACTIVEHYBRID SYSTEM

7-Series ActiveHybrid Although German automakers originally dismissed the concept of hybrids, BMW has accepted its popularity with American consumers and will be releasing its ActiveHybrid technology in 2009 with the new 7-series and X6. As compared to a traditional combustion engine, the ActiveHybrid system reduces fuel consumption by up to 20 percent. ActiveHybrid's advantage over conventional hybrids comes through combining a turbocharged V8 combustion engine with two high-performance 20 kw electric motors that put out 210 nm torque for greater efficiency over a much larger speed range. In addition, it's two-mode active transmission combine the combustion engine and electric motors in two ranges, delivering power and efficiency not seen in traditional hybrids. - Kurt Gensheimer FERRARI CALIFORNIA

Ferrari California with convertible hardtop up The Ferrari California is an open-topped GT, an under-$200,000 complement to the Ferrari lineup. The car, making its North American debut, has an eight-cylinder engine which makes 460 horsepower. Ferrari officials described the car as a reach-back to the past (Editor's note: some readers may recall the original Ferrari California - the subject car in the popular movie, "Ferris Beuller's Day Off") and a car which complements their sporting car lineup with something which is pure Ferrari DNA combined with a comfortable driving experience, which they take to be the spirit of a GT car. - Brian Kennedy FORD FUSION, FUSION HYBRID, MERCURY MILAN, MILAN HYBRID According to the technical data, this quartet should be nothing short of formidable. For the 2010 model year, Ford will offer three gasoline engine options on the Fusion - from a four-in-line Duratec 2.5 liter, to a 263-horsepower, 3.5-liter V6. The four cylinders are expected to deliver at least a 6 mile per gallon highway improvement over the previous generation, and have a fuel economy at least 3 mpg better than its chief rivals - Toyota Camry and Honda Accord. The 3.0 liter V6 develops a vaunted eighty horsepower per liter of output - i.e. 240 HP and 222 pound-feet of torque. All 2010 Fusion models will have six-speed transmissions (both manual and automatic), thus improving fuel consumption and efficiency.

Ford Fusion Hybrid A more fuel-conscious customer will have available hybrid models of the Fusion and Milan with a 155-horsepower four cylinder engine. The speed up to 47 mph can be reached in pure electric mode, allowing the Fusion to run 700 miles on a tank of gas. Ninety-four percent of braking power will be converted to electricity, and nicely displayed on a dashboard which can be configured from very simple to quite complex.

Mercury Milan Hybrid From Ford's optimistic presentation and, generally, throughout the LA Auto Show, a prospective customer would barely know that a financial storm is brewing outside the exhibit halls, and - come 2010 - the Detroit carmakers may not exist as they do today. Ford is increasing its car production, and the presenters promised new vehicle cycles of three years. One has to ask, however, whether, in this economic climate, is it necessary to have a Milan and its hybrid version displayed nearby when the Mercury line models, in both design and features, are so close to the basic Ford and not far enough from the Lincoln MKZ, the top of the line car on the same vehicle platform? And while a use of recyclable materials inside the Fusion is commendable, a drab, second-hand look they create is not. At least two observers found the use of blue accents on the Fusion dashboard unappealing, and someone else mentioned, while sitting in the Hybrid: "It looks better then I thought." The Fusion and Milan undoubtedly have technical advantages over Camry and Accord, but this segment is mercilessly competitive, and the Japanese have established themselves, in consumers perception, as having solid and reliable products to offer year after year. After the Ford presentation, a magician hired by Ford was dazzling the guests with his prestidigitation mastery while shuffling a single deck of cards. As the aces were appearing seemingly out of thin air, here was hoping that Ford could use some of this magic in the weeks, months and years ahead. - Zoran Segina FORD MUSTANG

2010 Mustang GT The all-new 2010 Ford Mustang is even better than the last generation Mustang that was a winner right out of the box. Outside is a new look that makes the Mustang design look fast, even when its parked. Inside, the new, refined look includes a one-piece soft-touch instrument panel. Mustang now features SYNC, dual-zone climate control, SIRIUS Travel Link, a Reverse Camera system, and an Easy Fuel Capless Fuel Filler system to make fill-ups quick and easy and help reduce fuel tank evaporative emissions. The 4.6 liter V8 now generates 315 horses. A wider strut tower brace on the GT adds more precise handling. Advance Trac electronic stability control is standard on all Mustangs. A new Sport Mode on Premium GT models disables the system to let the rear slide out when more spirited driving dynamics is called for. - Harvey Schwartz HONDA CRZ

Honda CRZ concept At the 2008 LA Auto Show, Honda has on display the CRZ concept car. It's a very nice looking two-seater sports car, but the tail end is quite strange looking. Most likely - like every concept car - the actual CRZ will be different from the concept car. And by then, the rear end will most likely have adopted a more "normal" design. What makes this sports car interesting is its gas/electric Hybrid Synergy Drive. CRZ acutely stands for "Compact Renaissance Zero." The on-board computer is supposed to talk back to the driver and give information how efficient the drive is. We can always be driving in a different way and thereby improving our gas mileage. The CRZ has a high "fun factor" so this mechanism could be useful. Just this concept car will make a visit to the LA Auto Show worthwhile for many. - Olov Lindberg HONDA FC SPORT

Honda FC Sport concept The LA Auto Show served as the venue for the world debut of the Honda FC Sport design study model - a fuel cell-powered, three-seat sports car concept. Honda hopes that the FC Sport showcases the flexibility and potential of fuel cell technology already found in the Honda FCX Clarity by reconfiguring it into a lightweight sports car design, offering an ultra-low center of gravity, powerful electric motor performance and zero-emissions. - Olov Lindberg HONDA INSIGHT

Honda Insight concept Honda is showing the new Insight concept (a thinly disguised version of the production model) at the LA Auto Show - a North American debut. It's a very nice looking car. Honda asserts it will be the lowest-priced hybrid on today's market. That will make it cheaper than the market leader Toyota Prius. If the gas mileage is close to the Prius, the Insight will be very competitive. With three squeezed in the back, the Insight is a bonafide five passenger sedan. Be prepared for this car to sell for a bit over the MSRP. Look for the Insight to hit the showrooms in the spring. - Olov Lindberg HYUNDAI SONATA HYBRID

Hyundai Sonata Hybrid drivetrain (Berry) It may be a while before you'll be able to park one in your driveway, but the Hyundai Sonata Hybrid is in the not-too-distant future as part of the car maker's "Blue Drive" line of eco-friendly vehicles. The Sonata Hybrid, Hyundai's first gas-electric hybrid in the U.S., will feature new lithium polymer battery technology. Lithium polymer batteries are lighter and more powerful than the batteries currently used in hybrid vehicles. This will make the vehicle more efficient, increasing range and fuel efficiency. Hyundai plans to begin producing the Sonata Hybrid in 2010, following the introduction of high-mileage "Blue" editions of Accent and Elantra. - Reed Berry INFINITI G37 CONVERTIBLE

Infiniti G37 Convertible - top down (Dapoz)

Infiniti G37 Convertible - top up (Dapoz) The 2009 G37 convertible is Infiniti's first drop-top in 16 years. With its three-piece metal roof up, the G37 maintains the coupe's long cabin/short trunk proportions - though the car needed to be lengthened and widened to fit the folded roof. The 325-hp, 3.7L V6 is identical to the engine used in the G Coupe. Like the coupe, the four-seat convertible comes in three versions. The top-of-the-line Sport is fitted with 19-inch wheels, Viscous Limited-Slip Differential, sport-tuned suspension and sport brakes. Look for a spring launch. - Chuck Dapoz LAMBORGHINI GALLARDO LP560-4 SPYDER

Gallardo LP560-4 Spyder (Grafman) These days perhaps a Murcielago Spyder is just too much Lamborghini. The Gallardo LP560-4 Spyder is a perfect compromise. The LP signifies Longitudinale Posteriore, or lengthways rear placement of the mid-engine 5.2 liter, 90-degree, V10. 560 defines the horsepower. Power meets the ground in this convertible via the Viscous Traction (VT) system, and the nearly essential permanent four-wheel drive. Onboard luxury includes the Lamborghini Multimedia System with a USB connector, a navigation system and a module for TV reception, plus a hands-free Bluetooth® phone set, and a rearview camera. Sub-four second sprints to sixty make this every inch an exotic. - John Grafman LOTUS EVORA

Evora Using the tagline, "True Character in a Faceless World" Lotus introduced the Evora Thursday. A combination of angles and scoops, the car features a mid-mounted DOHC 3.5-litre engine which propels the lithe little machine to sixty in under five seconds. In truth, no numbers do this car justice - its appeal is all visual, and the feeling you get looking at it is a cross between "I'd give up my 401K for that" and "Where you been all my life?" You might see hints of Ferrari in it, or you might just fall in love with its angles. The racy interior matches the go-fast exterior, with a design which makes it the only mid-engined 2+2 in the world. The Evora is the first all-new Lotus since the debut of the Elise in 1995. The engine is a six-cylinder developed by Toyota but paired with a manual transmission for the first time. Describing it as a car that you can drive during the week and take to the track on the weekend, company officials also said that it's easy to turn off the electronic nannies and let the car do what physics will allow it to do. - Brian Kennedy MAZDA 3

2010 Mazda 3 Since its release nearly five years ago, the Mazda 3 has become a global best-seller due to its incredible balance of sportiness, practicality, fuel efficiency and affordability. In fact, one in every three cars Mazda sells worldwide is a Mazda 3. With the 2010 Mazda 3, Mazda yet again expects to raise the standard of what "economy" cars can deliver with more refined ride quality, a more luxurious-yet-sporty interior, attractive exterior styling resembling the RX-8 and improved safety features. The 2010 Mazda 3 will carry over the first-gen 2.0L four-cylinder, but will offer a new 2.5L with the company's innovative new Start Stop technology that should put out between 175-185 horsepower. - Kurt Gensheimer MERCEDES-BENZ During the media days, most of the car companies are showing of their new car design(s). Mercedes-Benz had a fun way to approach this concept, wrapping its cars in a cover with a Bow, a box and another even larger box. Each had a Christmas tag sharing a little insight of what was all wrapped up. GLK350

GLK The first present to be unwrapped was the all-new mid-size 2010 GLK350, a sharp-looking five-passenger SUV. It has nice angular lines and a strong stance suggesting it is capable of handling anywhere you want to go. And according to the movie, it appears agile and has sophisticates sharp capabilities, suggesting it doesn't just look ready to go it is. Along with its nice design, this SUV may be one of Mercedes-Benz's most fuel-efficient vehicles ever. The GLK350 has a seven-speed automatic transmission along with a fuel saving designed 3.5-liter V6. The GLK350 also comes in the 4Matic technology. SL65 AMG BLACK SERIES COUPE

SL65 AMG Black Series The next present unwrapped was the most powerful and stunning SL65 AMG Black Series Coupe. Nothing could be heard more from the media attending was just "Oh my God." This AMG is amazing looking with huge flares, large air intakes in the front, an overall low profile hugging a staggered wheel configuration. With all the body and profile designs, this AMG is equipped with a massive brakes system with front discs in excess of 15 inches in diameter and with six-piston calipers and in the rear four piston calipers control 14 inch discs. This SL will reach 0-60mph in a heart-stopping 3.8 seconds. FACINATION

Facination The final package opened was the concept coupe named Fascination. It is a long flowing body, with rear wide flares and a completely see through glass top. Upon closer look, one of the fun shows was at a push of a button the rear cargo space opens up to display two bottles of Champaign glasses and holders too. The Fascination is a unique design for Mercedes-Benz and it will be interesting where this stylish concept will be when produced for the market. - Kurt Fuhrman MINI E

MINI E (Dapoz) The E stands for Electric. The MINI E is powered by a high-performance lithium-ion battery, which replaces the rear seat and adds nearly 700 pounds compared with the gasoline version. MINI says the car hits 60 mph in 8.5 seconds, reaches a top speed of 95 mph, has a cruising range of 150 miles, and can be recharged in two-plus hours. Five hundred MINI Es are headed to the LA and New York City areas, where one-year leases will be offered for $850/month, all maintenance included. If you're interested, check out miniusa.com/minie-usa for details. - Chuck Dapoz NISSAN 370Z

For 2009, the Nissan Z gets its first redesign since its reintroduction in 2003. It also gets a new name, 370Z, with displacement of the V6 increasing to 3.7 liters. It pumps 332 horses, 26 horsepower more than the current model. Though the engine is larger, the Z has gotten noticeably smaller. It's nearly three inches shorter, the wheelbase is nearly four inches shorter, and weight has been reduced 95 pounds compared with the 350Z Enthusiast model. The 370Z goes on sale in January, with a base price of $29,930. Coming next: the 370Z Roadster, for the 2010 model year. - Chuck Dapoz NISSAN CUBE

Cube While I'm almost always impressed with Nissan's styling, engineering, and fun factor, I just don't get the Nissan Cube, which made its debut at the 2009 LA Auto Show. My initial impression is that it is a miniature Element or Scion, and that it looks a bit like a retro microwave. Others described it with terms like yuck, boxy, ugly, school bus like, quirky - and retro. I suppose if the adjectives Nissan is using in its promo materials is accepted, (clever, inspired asymmetrical design, responsive, roomy, casual lounge interior), it may have a chance. I'm all for practical, unique, and quirky. I hope it is fun to drive. I wish Nissan the best of luck with the Cube. - BT Justice PORSCHE BOXSTER AND CAYMAN

Boxster

Cayman Ferry Porsche, the founder of Porsche sports cars, built the first Porsche - the mid-engine Porsche No. 1 in 1948. Carrying on Ferry's legacy, Porsche introduced the new-generation mid-engined Boxster and Cayman. Both built either standard or with the increased horsepower S versions. Porsche's race-built PDK (Porsche dual-clutch gearbox) design is now available in the Boxster and Cayman. The uniqueness of this system optimizes performance while saving on the consumption of gas. The double-clutch gearbox should be a very impressive option. Even more impressive is the Cayman S with 320 bhp, which is said to now accelerate 0-62 mph in just 4.9 seconds - only 0.2 seconds off the acceleration of the 911 Carrera. Both new models have a wider stance and wider tires. Optional ceramic brakes are said to stop the vehicles with equal fortitude. All-in-all, both new models look more dynamic and should have performance to match. - Kurt Fuhrman SPYKER C8 AILERON

C8 Aileron Aileron is a part of an airplane wing that controls bank - when a jetliner departing LAX for New York dips left. The aviation heritage of Spyker C8 Aileron is shown in three jet engine intakes on its all-aluminum space frame. A longer wheelbase can now accommodate a six speed automatic ZF transmission connected to a 4.2 liter V8 producing 400 horsepower. Aileron's stunning looks resemble race cars of yesterday. As Hans van Rennes, the head of the Spyker racing program puts it - "a feel of an old Aston Martin with a performance of a Ferrari." The Aileron chassis will be especially suited for racing in Le Mans when the GT classes get reorganized for 2011. Available here in the first quarter of 2009 for less that $220,000. - Zoran Segina VOLKSWAGEN TOUAREG GETS DIRTY WITH DIESEL TECHNOLOGY

Baja 1000 Touareg TDI Trophy Truck There's a difference between dirty diesels and diesels that get dirty, and Volkswagen is making sure the distinction is clear with its 2009 Touareg. To make VW's flagship diesel SUV clean enough to be legal in all 50 states, the 2009 Touareg will feature urea-injection exhaust in a smaller-yet-powerful 3.0 V6 TDI motor which puts out 240 horsepower and just over 400 lbs.-ft. torque. And to further prove the Touareg's penchant for dirt, VW and Red Bull unveiled its Baja 1000 Touareg Trophy Truck powered by a clean diesel V-12 that puts out a crushing 550 horsepower and 625 pound-feet of torque with the capability of running over 400 miles on one tank of fuel. - Kurt Gensheimer GREEN CAR OF THE YEAR In addition to the major debuts, this year's show will highlight the latest "green" auto technology with significant alternative fuel vehicle news. Also, for the fourth year in a row, Green Car Journal unveiled the coveted "Green Car of The Year Award." This award continues to grow in significance as consumer demand for more fuel efficient and environmentally positive vehicles increases exponentially.

Jetta TDI Cup Racer (foreground) This year, Volkswagen's clean diesel Jetta TDI wins the 2009 Green Car of the Year award. While the Jetta TDI's resumé (EPA estimated 41 mpg highway fuel economy, reduced greenhouse gas emissions, and extremely low tailpipe emissions) is "green" by any standards, it beat the competition by providing fuel efficiency at hybrid levels in a more cost-effective manner. And anytime a car beats a BMW (in this case the 335d) in any competition, it is cause for bragging rights and celebration leaving the competition green with envy. Drivers will discover that the Jetta TDI is "not your father's diesel" - VW's new diesel technology is quiet by diesel standards and a far cry from what you may recall from years past from the stereotypical diesel family sedan. - Randolph Chew CARLOS GHOSEN OPENS THE LA AUTO SHOW PRESS DAYS AS KEYNOTE

Nissan CEO Carlos Ghosn The 2009 LA Auto show kicked off with an inspiring keynote by Carlos Ghosn, president and CEO of Nissan Motor Co., Ltd. and Renault S.A. While we have heard "yes we can" for a while now, Goshen's tag line could well be "yes we are" or "yes we will." With automakers running on empty, Goshen described how Nissan/Renault is taking action to free us from the oil and environmental scourges. The end game is a full line of zero-emission electric vehicles. The method is working with governments and other industry to create technology and an infrastructure to generate electricity from renewable sources, then efficiently distribute it to consumers. For example, Nissan and Israel are developing 500 government charging stations. In response to LA Car's own Zoran Segina's question about how the batteries will be disposed, Goshen stated that government investment to transform the industry is critical and that Nissan will lease batteries to consumers, allowing them to always have current technology and Nissan to recycle old batteries. - BT Justice DESIGN STUDIOS COMPETE IN THE 5TH ANNUAL LA AUTO SHOW DESIGN CHALLENGE

Motor Sports 2025 Chapparal Volt entry by GM Advanced Design Today's race cars have ground-breaking technology to improve speed, power, performance and safety but what a difference 17 years into the future can make. Imagine race cars that go beyond the expectations and challenges of racing today, such as never needing to stop for re-fueling or collision avoidance assistance technology for enhanced safety. Nine of Southern California's automotive design studios did just that, predicting how auto racing will change by the year 2025. The designs are part of the fifth annual Los Angeles Auto Show's Design Challenge, where studios including Audi, BMW, GM, Honda, Mazda, Mitsubishi, Mercedes-Benz, Toyota and Volkswagen were pitted against each other to showcase their talents and further explore new ideas in automotive design. "Automotive designers have always been fascinated with Motor Sports and this year's Design Challenge has provided them with the opportunity to use their creative talent to look at these cars with new eyes, using innovative technologies and approaches" said Chuck Pelly, director of Design Los Angeles and partner in The Design Academy, Inc. "This adds to the excitement, interest and personal involvement in the sport that has thrilled people of all ages for many years...and many more years to come."
