5 Drive-In Movie Theaters in Los Angeles to Visit

Published on Sat, May 9, 2020

By: Collin Morgan

Drive-in theaters are a nostalgic and unique flashback to simpler times. Luckily for us, LA boasts some of the best drive-in theaters in the country.

Drive-In Theaters enjoyed a brief surge in popularity thanks to COVID-19’s social distancing rules and the temporary closure of traditional movie theaters. Unfortunately, most drive-ins have now closed until further notice. When they re-open, show them some love and go see a movie or two. Drive-ins are still a fantastic date idea.

Fortunately, there is still one drive-in showing movies at this time!

Mission Tiki Drive-In (Montclair)

Somehow, the Mission Tiki is still showing movies during COVID-19. I did some digging, and this is the only drive-in currently in operation around Los Angeles. Sporting a tribal tiki theme, the four-screen drive-in shows nightly double features, presenting recent hits like Knives Out and The Invisible Man. There are a few rules though: you must view the movie while in your vehicle, you can’t park closer than 10 feet to another vehicle and you must practice social distancing constantly. If you’re interested in catching a flick, I recommend you get there early since lines are bound to be long.

Here are 4 of LA’s finest drive-in theaters to visit when they reopen.

Van Buren Drive-In Theater (Riverside)

The Van Buren has expanded to four screens since its inception in 1964. Since then, it has become the highest-grossing drive-in anywhere in California. The theater shows a nice mix of current movies and flaunts an old-style California theme. Admission is for a double feature, but attendees have the option to leave if they’d rather skip on the second movie.

Vineland Drive-In (City of Industry)

The Vineland Drive-In boasts four screens and shows a variety of new releases. To get any sound for your movie, an FM radio is needed. Don’t have one? Rentals are available at the snack bar for $10 a night. Might as well grab some popcorn and candy while you’re up there!

Electric Dusk Drive-In (Los Angeles)

This drive-in might have the best scenery of any on this list. The skyscrapers of downtown stand tall behind the screen while you watch the movie of choice. This drive-in also offers Outdoor Astroturf Seating, so if you’d rather relax in a lawn chair, you can! The Electric Dusk Drive-In is also pet friendly, so enjoy a movie with your furry friend!

Paramount Drive-In (Paramount)

The Paramount has reopened after a 22-year hiatus with two massive 75-foot screens equipped with Barco Digital projection and Dolby Digital radio sound. The food menu has been expanded and the drive-in is particularly clean. The Paramount has definitely earned its place as one of the most popular drive-ins in LA!
