OPEN LETTER TO STREET RACERS: COME ON DOWN!

Of late the press has had to report the news of more tragic deaths due to young people racing automobiles on city streets. Our dragstrip at Toyota Speedway at Irwindale has been offering a safe alternative to illegal street racing for several years now. Every Thursday night we open our NHRA-sanctioned dragstrip to anyone with an automobile and a valid driver’s license. We’ll even coach newcomers in the nuances of drag racing if asked. The charge is nominal ($20) and each vehicle is closely inspected for safety before being allowed to run. We’d very much like to invite you to our facility at Irwindale to get a close-up look at how our program works and who’s taking advantage of being able to drive as fast as they can in a safe and controlled environment that also doubles as a friendly social event. We all know that it is very hard to prove a negative, but we know for a fact that we’ve convinced hundreds and hundreds of young people that they can have fun driving their car very fast without jeopardizing their own lives, the lives of their friends, and those of innocent bystanders. There really is a safe alternative to street racing that’s just as exciting even if it is legal. “Legal” is not just an adult code word for “boring”. No, we can’t stop every needless wreck, but together, perhaps we can put some distance between you and the need for the press to constantly report them. Thanks very much!
