Nearly 75% of Bentley’s customers are now ordering the ‘Diamond-in-Diamond’ stitching design for the Continental GT and GTC models. The interior material requires an unfathomable 712 stitches per diamond and can only be produced with a high level of skill using a specially commissioned piece of machinery. The Diamond-in-Diamond stitching is available on the seats, door casings and rear quarters, and is available as part of the Mulliner Driving Specification.

The quilt-like design is extremely soft to the touch and is visually impressive. By combining both stitching and embroidery, the creation process produces a complex grid of royally styled diamonds. Due to the difficulty of creating these diamonds, the stitching design cannot be mass-produced, and requires specialized machinery to make.

Bentley’s interior designer, Louise McCallum, was assigned to design an innovative interior for the new Continental GT and GTC, and decided that altering existing diamond designs was a solid place to start. When describing the design process, McCallum says, “It was seamless from start to finish, a really pleasurable process. The idea really drove itself along. The Diamond-in-Diamond concept is intrinsically Bentley, and is simple. It offers the potential for a multitude of colour options and the size of the diamonds can be altered, we can therefore see a future for this design as we can continue to freshen it up and innovate.”

The Diamond-in-Diamond concept is produced using a massive specialized embroidery machine. The machine is able to tie off each individual diamond, and the complex web of stitching is achieved fluidly. The machine can complete an entire car set at once, including every quilted interior panel, all at the same time. The thread color is completely customizable, giving customers an almost endless array of personalization options.

The Diamond-in-Diamond stitching concept is truly elegant, and somehow blends subtlety with a striking appearance. As part of the Mulliner Driving Specification, the stitching design is a necessity to really indulge in a Bentley, and it would be a crime to forgo it.
