GMC Hummer EV Presents Incredible Stats

The cultural icon makes a stunning return, but not in the way many expected.

The Hummer has gained a sort of cult classic following, spread across all variations from the H1 to the H3. Hummers are off-road legends, produced for the military and then adapted for the public. The poor fuel mileage is the stuff of nightmares, with the H2 averaging 14 mpg on the highway and 10 mpg in the city. Big, beefy, and a staple in the custom scene, Hummers of all shapes and sizes still prowl the pavement.

On February 2, 2020, I was watching The Big Game with a plate full of buffalo wings and bean dip when the commercial for the GMC Hummer EV released, and the food just about fell off my lap. The commercial was mysterious and didn’t show much of the actual Hummer, but the statistics that flashed across the screen were nearly unbelievable.

1,000 horsepower?

11,500 lb.-ft. of torque?

0-60 mph in 3 seconds?

Are you kidding me? This is for the Hummer, right? The ungraceful, lumbering giant of a vehicle can’t possibly achieve those numbers. Leave it up to the engineers at GM to utilize the EV platform as a way to reverse automotive common sense.

Now, the torque spec is actually a bit misleading. I’m willing to bet 11,500 lb.-ft. of torque is achieved after being multiplied through the drive ratios. The more common torque number we’ll expect is probably somewhere between 1,000 – 1,300 ft.-lb. of torque instead, and that figure represents the amount of twist coming from the electric motor itself.

The commercial revealed the Hummer EV with qualities that go against the grain of everything we thought we knew about Hummer: quiet, zero emissions and mind-boggling speed and power. The only thing that seems to carry over from previous generations is the off-road capability, which GMC describes as ‘incredible’.

GMC HUMMER EV brings bold design and remarkable capability to the electrified vehicle space. GMC introduces the HUMMER EV in an ad titled “Quiet Revolution” featuring LeBron James.

“GMC builds premium and capable trucks and SUVs and the GMC HUMMER EV takes this to new heights,” said Duncan Aldred, vice president of Global Buick and GMC. “We are excited to debut our revolutionary zero-emissions truck during the biggest night in TV advertising.”

LeBron James, who starred in the commercial also commented: “Teaming up with GMC to introduce the Hummer EV is a natural fit. Everyone knows about my love for Hummer since high school and I’m proud to be a part of announcing the new EV model. The truck may be quiet, but the performance numbers speak for themselves.”

The GMC Hummer EV will be officially revealed on May 20, 2020. For more information, visit www.gmc.com/HummerEV
