As the Toyota Supra takes its final bow, the MkV Final Edition is its fun-loving swan song.

Say farewell to the Toyota GR Supra! It’s discontinued after this model year. We would hate to see it go, but love to watch it leave.

The 2026 Toyota GR Supra is sadly going the way of the dodo bird. That’s right, it’s going extinct after the 2026 model year because BMW decided to end the Z4’s production, which shares its platform with the fabled GR Supra. I know, it’s sad. But I was happy to get one last spin in the Japanese/German sports car.

As you can guess, it didn’t disappoint. The new MkV Final Edition that I drove gave the car a little extra spice with GR-themed interior with red seatbelts. But its interior changes were only part of the equation. There were upgraded front brake calipers and rotors, as well upgraded performance dampers with Adaptive Variable Suspension. To be honest, on the rocky roads of Colorado, it’s hard to tell the difference. But it was still fun, nonetheless.

Performance and Driving Experience

Push the red “GR” start button and hear the engine roar to life. It’s the sound of our people; the people who crave sports car performance, even when there’s pot holes in the road and you have to drive around them to not damage the car. Potholes aside, the GR Supra was immensely fun to drive. The 3.0-liter turbo inline-six kicks in quickly, unleashing a surge of power that goes all the way to the redline. It may be a heavy car, but the 382 horsepower that it produces is more than enough to get it moving. The eight-speed automatic transmission shifts crisp and quickly and the paddle shifters do their job better than you would expect.

Although it’s made by BMW, the Supra’s engine is a stout machine that produces impressive horsepower figures with strong reliability claims. Maybe the collaboration between the two manufacturers wasn’t a bad idea after all.

To be honest, I actually prefer the automatic transmission over the manual. Blasphemy, I know.  But the manual transmission’s shifter and clutch action don’t really match up well, in my opinion, which detracts from the driving experience. Plus, the automatic is just easier to live with for such a large sports car. Remember, the GR Supra isn’t exactly a Miata, it weighs 3,400 pounds and has a bit of heft to it when tossing it around corners. It handles extremely well, as you would expect, taking the tight turns through the canyon road I drove it on with ease. But it’s suspension is comfortable enough to drive casually without beating up your kidneys.

As for fuel economy, the EPA says this car can get up to 22 mpg in the city and 29 on the highway. During my week of testing, I averaged 22.3 mpg, which is on point considering I mostly drove it on city streets with the occasional romp on the gas pedal for a little driving thrill.

Design and Interior

Take a look at the Toyota GR Supra and you will immediately know that it’s unlike anything else on the road. It’s low, wide, and very dramatic, and it looks like the designers were in a mid-caffeine rush when putting the pen to paper. Some enthusiasts have loved and hated it over the years, but I think it looks good. The MkV Final Edition leans even harder into the whole “last hurrah” thing with more aggressive details and upgrades that make it feel a little more special than just another trim level.

The tight confines of the Toyota GR Supra’s interior leaves enough space for two average-sized adults. Just be sure to watch your head when getting into it, the roof hangs low.

Inside, it’s very much a driver-focused cockpit, which sounds great until you realize that also means space is not exactly overflowing. The seats are good, the layout makes sense, and the whole cabin feels solid, but it’s definitely cozy in the “hope you didn’t bring much” kind of way.

trunk space in the Toyota Supra
There’s not much room in the trunk, but it’s enough to accommodate your everyday essentials, as long as you’re not taking a trip to Costco.

Visibility is also rough, so backing out of parking spots can feel like a trust exercise. Daily driving it is possible, but the Supra does like to remind you that practicality was never the mission.

There’s only 10.2 cubic feet of cargo space, which is enough for maybe some weekend luggage and groceries, but not much more.

Safety

It’s hard to believe that a sports car like this would have a myriad of safety features, but it does. It has the usual safety tech like airbags, seatbelts, and traction control, but Toyota also threw in a pre-collision warning with pedestrian detection and lane-departure warning, which are nice to have in such a low, wide car like this.

The GR Supra’s silhouette is still breathtaking, in my opinion. There’s nothing else on the road like it.

Price and Value

The 2026 GR Supra starts at around $58,300, and the MkV Final Edition climbs well into the upper-$60,000 range before you get too carried away. So no, this is not a cheap thrill. But compared with a lot of European performance cars, it still feels like a relatively sane way to buy something this quick and this entertaining. You’re paying for character here, not just numbers, and the Supra has plenty of both.

Verdict

The 2026 Toyota GR Supra is still a blast. It’s quick, loud enough to be fun, sharp in the corners, and way more memorable than a lot of cars that cost the same. Is it practical? Not really. Is visibility good? Also no. Does that matter when you’re driving something that feels like it actually has a pulse? Probably not. As a sendoff for this generation, the Supra still absolutely gets the job done.

Pros and Cons

Pros: Seriously quick, great engine, manual is available, fun personality, looks like nothing else.
Cons: Tight interior, bad visibility, not exactly practical, can get a little spicy at the limit, gets expensive fast.
