MERCEDES-AMG: RACE-BRED PERFORMANCE, THE BOOK

mercedes-amg

Preciously rare photography and a compelling story distinguish this new book from Matt DeLorenzo about the legacy of Mercedes-AMG.

AMG has always sat in that fun zone between refinement and pure rebellion, and Matt DeLorenzo really leans into that in Mercedes-AMG: Race-Bred Performance.

He walks through the big eras from the wild Red Pig days to today’s GT models and shows how two racing-obsessed engineers managed to change the course of Mercedes-Benz.

In 1971, this V8-powered Mercedes-Benz 300 SEL marked the beginning of AMG. In English, AMG stands for Aufrecht, Melcher, Großaspach, named after the founders Hans Werner Aufrecht and Erhard Melcher, and Aufrecht's hometown, Großaspach, representing the high-performance division of Mercedes-Benz. The race car was affectionately known as the Red Pig.

I have a soft spot for AMG’s early years. The Red Pig era just speaks to me.

Cars were loud, raw, and alive in a way we do not see anymore.

Think big horsepower, zero electronic handholding, Gulf Racing vibes, and disco on the radio.

There are three DTM eras: The original DTM (1988-1996), the new DTM (2000-2018), and the DTM GT3 Era (2021-Present). Drivers like Bernd Schneider and Gary Paffett took multiple titles in the DTM years before their exit in 2018.

Then came the DTM years, and AMG showed up ready to win. You can still feel that energy baked into the streetcars like the vaunted Black Series.

The photography is fantastic, which is exactly what I expect from publisher Motorbooks. The big, clean shots give every car real presence.

The AMG Hammer had a menacing look. Early models were equipped with 5.4 and 5.6 liter engines.

Long-hood classics. Black Series monsters. Early supercharged V8 troublemakers. The newer machines carrying the badge forward.

At just over 200 pages, the book covers a lot, but AMG’s winning history is too deep to fit into one round.

Top left: As a fitting end to the first-generation AMG GT race car production, a limited run of GT 130Y models was produced to commemorate Mercedes-Benz' 130-year racing history. Middle left: At the end of 2024, Mercedes-AMG captured its sixth straight European Fantec GT World Challenge sports cars title in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia. Bottom left: On the Jeddah podium are Lucas Auer, Maro Engel, and Daniel Morad. Right: Maro Engel celebrates his sicth straight win and ninth for the AMG GT3 at the Guia circuit in Macau.

You finish wanting more. More engines. More stories. More of the crazy projects that built the legend.

A sequel is in order.

For longtime AMG fans, this is an easy yes.

By 2014, the Mercedes-AMG lineup had grown to 14 models.

For newcomers, it is a fantastic introduction to why those three letters hit as hard as they do.

And if you’ve ever smiled hearing a V8 rumble under a disco beat, this book is for you. – Glenn Oyoung
